How to Replace a Volvo Replacement Key Fob

Your Volvo key fob can do so more than just unlock and lock your car. It's also a sophisticated anti-theft device that has a special technology that communicates with your vehicle to help prevent theft.

But what happens when the battery of your key fob fails? Volvo Cars Mission Viejo's team has the answers.

How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer greater functionality and ease of use when compared to manual keys. Batteries eventually degrade and need to be changed. If your Volvo key fob is beginning to work intermittently, that's an indication that the battery is depleted and will require replacement soon.

There are simple steps that you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, find a clean work surface to perform the procedure. Place all the tools you'll require. Find the battery hatch and make sure it is set to "open." Use a flathead screwdriver, coin or a similar tool to make the hatch open. Next, carefully pry out the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook on the key-ring. Be sure to use rubber gloves to avoid damaging the clips or electronic contact surfaces.

Place the new battery into the socket once the old one has been removed. Ensure that the positive side of the battery is facing upwards, and that all clips are in place. Slide the cover downwards towards the key-ring area until it becomes loose and falls off. Uncover the cover and reveal the hidden mechanical key blade. It can be used to unlock your car through the driver's door if the key fob battery is dead or gone.

How to Start Your Vehicle

The majority of modern vehicles are equipped with key fobs which can perform more than just unlock or lock the doors. They can also perform useful functions, such as summoning and auto parking the vehicle. In fact, the brand new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start the engine using key fob buttons. What exactly does it do?

Locate a clean surface on which you can set up everything you need to complete this project. Then, lay the fob down on the work surface with its Volvo logo facing upwards. Next, use a flathead screwdriver, coin or similar tool to open the battery hatch to the open position. Avoid touching the electronic contact surfaces with your tools. This could cause the fob to stop working properly.

Once the hatch has been opened, place the battery into its socket. Make sure the positive (+ side) is facing up. After the clips are secured into place, remove the battery cover and then put it back together the fob.

When you press the unlock button just once the alarm will disconnected and the driver's door will be unlocked. Pressing it a second time will unlock all doors as well as the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to open the windows during the hot days or to let in fresh air before climbing behind the wheel. If you're looking for more options, the key fob can also be used to turn on ERS, which can start the system for controlling your vehicle's temperature and allow it to cool or warm it to the desired temperature setting when the vehicle is at a stop.

How do I change the battery?

If your key fob is no longer locks or unlocks your vehicle it may be time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced using a flathead screwdriver plastic pry bar, or other small tools. Find the small slot houses the backup/emergency key for ignition made of metal. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or pry bar tool into the slot and gently pry open the back of the fob that holds the key. After the fob is open you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Replace the battery and snap back the fob.

Note: Certain older Volvo models have different types of batteries which is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 10ths of a millimeter smaller than a CR2032 battery, so you must be aware of the location of your replacement.

This is a crucial anti-theft feature that will stop your Volvo car from starting if you use the wrong key.

You'll have to take your lost key to a dealer to have it replaced. Your vehicle will also be reprogrammed.
